The Spanish Public Chemical Library (Quimioteca Publica Española, QPE) aims to maximize the value of compounds synthesized by Spanish academic groups by screening them against novel biological targets. This initiative offers these compounds a “second life” as chemical probes or potential drug candidates. QPE leverages three key strengths in Spain: the chemical diversity from academic chemistry groups, innovative pharmacological targets, and advanced screening capabilities.

The project is a collaboration between ES-OPENSCREEN and the Complementary Plan for Biotechnology Applied to Health (PCBAS) under the PERTE for Vanguard Health. It aligns with national and European programs (QCSIC, ChemBioFrance, POL- & CZ-OPENSCREEN, EU-OPENSCREEN) to create a shared platform for addressing unmet medical needs. As a unique feature, the submission process is coordinated with the EU-OPENSCREEN academic library (EACL) to benefit from both initiatives.

Compounds are deposited through a simple process that ensures researchers retain ownership and can reclaim them anytime. Secure, automated compound storage and logistics are managed by the coordinator of ES-OPENSCREEN and PCBAS-Galicia, USC´s INNOPharma Platform. Contributing chemists receive screening results, in silico predictions, and bioprofiling data, enriching publications and fostering new collaborations while maintaining full control over their compounds.
